The Danger of Not Moving Forward

This is part four of our series, The Danger of Not Moving Forward. You have been coming to church for years. You know the songs, you know the verses, and if you are honest, you know you are standing in the same spot you stood in three years ago. This message is about the obstacle closest to you, and the stages God takes every believer through.

“Therefore let us move beyond the elementary teachings about Christ and be taken forward to maturity…” (Hebrews 6:1-3)

Sometimes, We Are the Obstacle

One of the greatest dangers to your spiritual growth is not your enemy but you.

Your attitude. Your reactions. Your behaviour. Worry, irritation, and anger do not always come from other people; they come from inside you, and from the spiritual opposition around you. It is not always people stopping you. It is how you respond to them.

Someone sends a message in the church group, you read it the wrong way, and for three weeks you sulk and skip prayer meeting. Nobody stopped you. You stopped you. Understand the pattern: when God is ready to promote you, Satan works to distract you. The attack is subtle, through offence, emotions, and misunderstandings. But the real battle is never with people. It is light against darkness.

Increase Your Vision, Spiritually

You cannot move forward while your spiritual eyes are half shut.

Many believers are busy fighting each other while the true enemy stays hidden. You are not wrestling against your brother or sister. You are in a spiritual war, and only prayer gives you the sight to see it. Pray until you start seeing clearly.

When the soldiers came for Jesus in the garden, Peter pulled a sword and cut off a servant’s ear. It looked brave. It was blind. He could not see the bigger plan of God, so he swung at the nearest person. Jesus had to undo the damage. Reaction without sight always makes more work for God.

God Has a Time and Stage for Everything

Every level of your walk with God has its own furniture, and you cannot skip a floor.

Each stage has its own lessons, experiences, and shaping. You cannot bypass stages. You cannot microwave maturity. Do not ask for blessings out of season; immaturity delays destiny. A child does not go from crawling to college. We grow the same way, step by step. But many believers get stuck at the first step, learning and learning and never moving.

Stage One: Preparation

Preparation is where the basics go in, and the basics are what hold you up later.

In preparation we learn the basics of the Christian life. We develop character, discipline, and spiritual habits: prayer, the Word, fasting, giving, showing up. We learn that love matters more than gifts.

The Corinthian church was gifted, tongues and prophecy and all of it, and Paul still rebuked them for lacking love and order. Gifting without growth produces spiritual disorder. Love is as important as prayer. Miss one step and you get a misstep, and a misstep is immaturity.

Here is a simple test: if correction offends you, you are still in the early stages. Maturity means you grow past offence and welcome the shaping.

Move from the Outer Court to the Inner Court

You cannot stand in the outer court and the inner court at the same time, so you must choose.

The spiritual journey demands decisions. Leave the arguments behind. Let go of religious legalism and move into a deeper relationship. Understand that someone already paid the price for you to go further: Jesus.

Many believers stay stuck for decades in the same debates: which style of baptism, which denomination is the right one, what to wear, which rituals to keep. These are distractions. You were not saved to argue; you were saved to advance.

Yesterday’s bread cannot feed you today. Yesterday’s revelation will not defeat today’s enemy. You must move forward with fresh insight, fresh faith, and fresh obedience.

Final Word: Don’t Get Stuck in Preparation

God is calling you from faith to faith and glory to glory, not from argument to argument.

Do not let childish distractions or spiritual immaturity hold you where you are. Recognise the season you are in, submit to the process, and step into deeper maturity. Preparation is a stage, not a home.

• Read 1 Corinthians 13 every morning and ask: which line do I fail most often?
• Drop one old argument. Leave the debate in the group chat and pray for the person instead.
