Job 31

“I made a covenant with my eyes; how then should I look lustfully at a young woman?

“मैंने अपनी आँखों के विषय वाचा बाँधी है, फिर मैं किसी कुँवारी पर क्यों आँखें लगाऊँ?

For what is the portion from God above, and the heritage from the Almighty on high?

क्योंकि परमेश्वर स्वर्ग से कौन सा अंश और सर्वशक्तिमान ऊपर से कौन सी सम्पत्ति बाँटता है?

Is it not calamity to the unrighteous, and disaster to the workers of iniquity?

क्या वह कुटिल मनुष्यों के लिये विपत्ति और अनर्थ काम करनेवालों के लिये सत्यानाश का कारण नहीं है?

Doesn’t he see my ways, and count all my steps?

क्या वह मेरी गति नहीं देखता और क्या वह मेरे पग-पग नहीं गिनता?

“If I have walked with falsehood, and my foot has hurried to deceit

यदि मैं व्यर्थ चाल चलता हूँ, या कपट करने के लिये मेरे पैर दौड़े हों;

(let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know my integrity);

(तो मैं धर्म के तराजू में तौला जाऊँ, ताकि परमेश्वर मेरी खराई को जान ले)।

if my step has turned out of the way, if my heart walked after my eyes, if any defilement has stuck to my hands,

यदि मेरे पग मार्ग से बहक गए हों, और मेरा मन मेरी आँखों की देखी चाल चला हो, या मेरे हाथों में कुछ कलंक लगा हो;

then let me sow, and let another eat. Yes, let the produce of my field be rooted out.

तो मैं बीज बोऊँ, परन्तु दूसरा खाए; वरन् मेरे खेत की उपज उखाड़ डाली जाए।

“If my heart has been enticed to a woman, and I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door,

“यदि मेरा हृदय किसी स्त्री पर मोहित हो गया है, और मैं अपने पड़ोसी के द्वार पर घात में बैठा हूँ;

then let my wife grind for another, and let others sleep with her.

तो मेरी स्त्री दूसरे के लिये पीसे, और पराए पुरुष उसको भ्रष्ट करें।

For that would be a heinous crime. Yes, it would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges,

क्योंकि वह तो महापाप होता; और न्यायियों से दण्ड पाने के योग्य अधर्म का काम होता;

for it is a fire that consumes to destruction, and would root out all my increase.

क्योंकि वह ऐसी आग है जो जलाकर भस्म कर देती है, और वह मेरी सारी उपज को जड़ से नाश कर देती है।

“If I have despised the cause of my male servant or of my female servant, when they contended with me,

“जब मेरे दास व दासी ने मुझसे झगड़ा किया, तब यदि मैंने उनका हक़ मार दिया हो;

what then will I do when God rises up? When he visits, what will I answer him?

तो जब परमेश्वर उठ खड़ा होगा, तब मैं क्या करूँगा? और जब वह आएगा तब मैं क्या उत्तर दूँगा?

Didn’t he who made me in the womb make him? Didn’t one fashion us in the womb?

क्या वह उसका बनानेवाला नहीं जिसने मुझे गर्भ में बनाया? क्या एक ही ने हम दोनों की सूरत गर्भ में न रची थी?

“If I have withheld the poor from their desire, or have caused the eyes of the widow to fail,

“यदि मैंने कंगालों की इच्छा पूरी न की हो, या मेरे कारण विधवा की आँखें कभी निराश हुई हों,

or have eaten my morsel alone, and the fatherless has not eaten of it

या मैंने अपना टुकड़ा अकेला खाया हो, और उसमें से अनाथ न खाने पाए हों,

(no, from my youth he grew up with me as with a father, I have guided her from my mother’s womb);

(परन्तु वह मेरे लड़कपन ही से मेरे साथ इस प्रकार पला जिस प्रकार पिता के साथ, और मैं जन्म ही से विधवा को पालता आया हूँ);

if I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or that the needy had no covering;

यदि मैंने किसी को वस्त्रहीन मरते हुए देखा, या किसी दरिद्र को जिसके पास ओढ़ने को न था

if his heart hasn’t blessed me, if he hasn’t been warmed with my sheep’s fleece;

और उसको अपनी भेड़ों की ऊन के कपड़े न दिए हों, और उसने गर्म होकर मुझे आशीर्वाद न दिया हो;

if I have lifted up my hand against the fatherless, because I saw my help in the gate;

या यदि मैंने फाटक में अपने सहायक देखकर अनाथों के मारने को अपना हाथ उठाया हो,

then let my shoulder fall from the shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from the bone.

तो मेरी बाँह कंधे से उखड़कर गिर पड़े, और मेरी भुजा की हड्डी टूट जाए।

For calamity from God is a terror to me. Because of his majesty, I can do nothing.

क्योंकि परमेश्वर के प्रताप के कारण मैं ऐसा नहीं कर सकता था, क्योंकि उसकी ओर की विपत्ति के कारण मैं भयभीत होकर थरथराता था।

“If I have made gold my hope, and have said to the fine gold, ‘You are my confidence;’

“यदि मैंने सोने का भरोसा किया होता, या कुन्दन को अपना आसरा कहा होता,

If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, and because my hand had gotten much;

या अपने बहुत से धन या अपनी बड़ी कमाई के कारण आनन्द किया होता,

if I have seen the sun when it shined, or the moon moving in splendor,

या सूर्य को चमकते या चन्द्रमा को महाशोभा से चलते हुए देखकर

and my heart has been secretly enticed, and my hand threw a kiss from my mouth;

मैं मन ही मन मोहित हो गया होता, और अपने मुँह से अपना हाथ चूम लिया होता;

this also would be an iniquity to be punished by the judges, for I would have denied the God who is above.

तो यह भी न्यायियों से दण्ड पाने के योग्य अधर्म का काम होता; क्योंकि ऐसा करके मैंने सर्वश्रेष्ठ परमेश्वर का इन्कार किया होता।

“If I have rejoiced at the destruction of him who hated me, or lifted up myself when evil found him

“यदि मैं अपने बैरी के नाश से आनन्दित होता, या जब उस पर विपत्ति पड़ी तब उस पर हँसा होता;

(I have certainly not allowed my mouth to sin by asking his life with a curse);

(परन्तु मैंने न तो उसको श्राप देते हुए, और न उसके प्राणदण्ड की प्रार्थना करते हुए अपने मुँह से पाप किया है);

if the men of my tent have not said, ‘Who can find one who has not been filled with his meat?’

यदि मेरे डेरे के रहनेवालों ने यह न कहा होता, ‘ऐसा कोई कहाँ मिलेगा, जो इसके यहाँ का माँस खाकर तृप्त न हुआ हो?’

(the foreigner has not camped in the street, but I have opened my doors to the traveler);

(परदेशी को सड़क पर टिकना न पड़ता था; मैं बटोही के लिये अपना द्वार खुला रखता था);

if like Adam I have covered my transgressions, by hiding my iniquity in my heart,

यदि मैंने आदम के समान अपना अपराध छिपाकर अपने अधर्म को ढाँप लिया हो,

because I feared the great multitude, and the contempt of families terrified me, so that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door—

इस कारण कि मैं बड़ी भीड़ से भय खाता था, या कुलीनों से तुच्छ किए जाने से डर गया यहाँ तक कि मैं द्वार से बाहर न निकला-

oh that I had one to hear me! Behold, here is my signature! Let the Almighty answer me! Let the accuser write my indictment!

भला होता कि मेरा कोई सुननेवाला होता! सर्वशक्तिमान परमेश्वर अभी मेरा न्याय चुकाए! देखो, मेरा दस्तखत यही है। भला होता कि जो शिकायतनामा मेरे मुद्दई ने लिखा है वह मेरे पास होता!

Surely I would carry it on my shoulder, and I would bind it to me as a crown.

निश्चय मैं उसको अपने कंधे पर उठाए फिरता; और सुन्दर पगड़ी जानकर अपने सिर में बाँधे रहता।

I would declare to him the number of my steps. I would go near to him like a prince.

मैं उसको अपने पग-पग का हिसाब देता; मैं उसके निकट प्रधान के समान निडर जाता।

If my land cries out against me, and its furrows weep together;

“यदि मेरी भूमि मेरे विरुद्ध दुहाई देती हो, और उसकी रेघारियाँ मिलकर रोती हों;

if I have eaten its fruits without money, or have caused its owners to lose their life,

यदि मैंने अपनी भूमि की उपज बिना मजदूरी दिए खाई, या उसके मालिक का प्राण लिया हो;

let briers grow instead of wheat, and stinkweed instead of barley.” The words of Job are ended.

तो गेहूँ के बदले झड़बेरी, और जौ के बदले जंगली घास उगें!” अय्यूब के वचन पूरे हुए हैं।
