Forget the former things

Some of you drive past the same building every day and feel the same stab: the shop that closed, the office that let you go, the house where the marriage ended. The road has moved on, but you have not. This message is about the God who says, forget the former things, I am doing a new thing.

Forget the Former Things: Embracing God’s New Work in Your Life

God is not bound by your past failures, and He is not waiting for your past to improve first.

Scripture: Isaiah 43:18-19

“Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.”

Life has ups and downs. Victories and losses. A promotion one year, a hospital bed the next. In the middle of all that, God speaks to Israel in exile, and to you in Zirakpur: stop staring backwards. I am doing something now.

God’s Power to Transform Your Life

God can take the ruins of your past and build something new on the same ground. Whatever you have lost, He can restore. However dark the situation looks, He can make something beautiful out of it.

Many of us wait for reassurance from somewhere else: a doctor’s report, a job letter, one kind message on the phone. Those things are fine. But God is the source of hope, not the doctor and not the HR department. He is the one who actually changes a life.

Let Go of the Past

Forgetting the former things does not mean pretending; it means releasing their grip on you.

You cannot delete your memory, and God is not asking you to. He is asking you to take your hands off the past so that both hands are free for what He is giving. Paul puts it this way in Philippians 3:13: “forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead.” Your future is not decided by what happened to you. It is decided by how you respond to God’s call today.

Your Decision Matters

God will not drag you forward. He waits for you to take the first step. The choice to release the past is yours, and your choice opens the door to His action.

Don’t Be Stuck in Regret

Regret is a room with no windows. Many believers never grow because they keep re-living the exam they failed, the business that sank, the words they said in anger. Regret does not change yesterday. It only steals today.

Old Mindsets Must Change

You can pray, sing, and come to church every Sunday with an old mindset, and nothing changes. New wine needs new wineskins. Put down the old disappointment. Put down the old hurt.

Break Free from Past Hurts

The people who left you, deceived you, or broke you do not get to write your future.

Somebody reading this is still carrying a betrayal from years ago. A business partner ran with the money. A relative promised and never came. A friend spread the story. Stop rehearsing who left, who forsook, who broke you. Stop replaying who deceived you and let you down. Your past does not define you. God’s Word does.

And here is the hard part. When you keep bowing to an old failure, an old relationship, an old job, an old loss, you have made it an idol. You are placing what happened above the God who can restore. Holding on to the past is what keeps God from doing something new. Take it off the altar of your heart.

God is Always Doing Something New

God is the God of the present, and He does not want you living on last year’s testimony.

He is working now. He is inviting you now. Stale revelation, old testimonies, an experience from a youth camp ten years ago: these are good memories, but they are not today’s bread. Your phone asks for an update every month; your faith needs one every morning. Forgetting the past is like receiving fresh roti from God today, hot from the tawa, instead of eating yesterday’s leftovers. When you move forward, there is new grace and new growth waiting for you.

God Will Make a Way in the Wilderness

The wilderness is real, but God specialises in roads where there were none before.

The wilderness is uncertainty, fear, the dark stretch where you cannot see the next turn. But God parted the Red Sea for Israel with a wall of water on each side, and He will make a path for you. The wasteland is barrenness, the season where nothing grows. God does not send a cup of water there. He sends streams. He does more than meet the need; He brings life to dead ground.

Final Thoughts

God is asking you today, “Do you not perceive it?” He wants to do a new thing in you, but the first step is yours. Forget what lies behind. Step forward in faith. Trust that He is making a way, even where you cannot see one.

This week

• Write the one hurt you keep replaying on a piece of paper, pray over it, and tear it up.
• Send one message of forgiveness, or one apology, to a person from your past.
• Each morning before you open your phone, say out loud: “Lord, what new thing are You doing today?”

May the God who makes rivers in the desert open a road in front of you this week. God bless you abundantly.
