The Missional Church

You walk out of church on Sunday, cross the road to the chai stall, and the man pouring your cup asks, “So what happens in there every week?” What do you say? Most of us mumble something about singing and go quiet. This message is about a church that has an answer, because it has actually seen something.

The Missional Church: Understanding

A missional church is not a building with a cross on top; it is people who have met Jesus and cannot keep quiet about it.

Acts 4:1-3: “They seized Peter and John and, because it was evening, they put them in jail until the next day.”

Look at where this chapter begins. Peter and John have just prayed for a lame man at the temple gate. The man is walking, jumping, holding on to them. A crowd gathers. Peter tells them plainly what happened and who did it. Then the priests and the temple guard arrive, and the two of them spend the night in a cell. From this one chapter come four marks of a missional church: individual faithfulness, individual boldness, the act of God, and the church as a family.

What is a Missional Church?

A missional church is one that follows the teaching of Jesus and tells people plainly what it has found.

Acts 4 shows us how the first believers actually lived: with faith, with boldness, with prayer, and as one family. Four things. Take them one at a time.

1. Individual Faithfulness: A Commitment to the Gospel

Peter and John are arrested for speaking about Jesus, and they do not back down. Faithfulness means you stand where you stood yesterday, even when the room turns against you.

Remember who Peter is. A few weeks earlier he stood by a charcoal fire and told a servant girl three times, “I do not know the man.” Now he stands before the same council that condemned Jesus, speaks with a steady voice, and many who hear him believe. What changed? Not his education. His heart. He had been forgiven, and forgiven people cannot stay quiet.

“As for us, we cannot help speaking about what we have seen and heard” (Acts 4:20). That is the whole of mission in one line. Not pressure. Not a programme. Just people telling what they have found.

“Salvation is found in no one else” (Acts 4:12). We believe that, and we say it plainly.

So examine your own heart this week. Is there a sin you keep feeding that makes you go quiet about Jesus? Deal with it at the altar, and your voice will come back.

2. Individual Boldness: The Power of Standing Firm

Acts 4:13-20 tells us the council saw that Peter and John were unschooled, ordinary men, and they were astonished. Then they noticed one thing: these men had been with Jesus.

God does not check your certificates. He is not looking at your degree, your English, or your family name. He is looking for time spent with Him. A shopkeeper in Dhakoli who prays at 5 a.m. carries more authority than a man with three degrees who has not opened his Bible in a month.

Peter and John’s confidence came from one decision: they had made Jesus King of their lives. When the council ordered them to be silent, they did not argue and they did not fight. They went back to the believers and prayed for more boldness (Acts 4:29).

Stop counting your limitations. Count your hours with Jesus. That is where boldness comes from.

3. The Act of God: The Power of Prayer

The early church did not try to do God’s work with human strength. They prayed, and God moved. “After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken” (Acts 4:31). God’s power is greater than our effort. We need His hand at work, not just our own ability.

Many people in the Tricity are broken. Depression. Lust. Jealousy. A marriage gone cold. A job that eats a man alive. We cannot fix that with a WhatsApp forward. We need the hand of God. Miracles happen when we pray with faith, just as they did in the early church. So prayer is not the last resort when the report comes back bad. It is the first response.

A missional church is an interceding church. When you hear of a need, do you send a sad emoji, or do you get on your knees?

4. Becoming a Family of God: Unity in Christ

The early church was a family, and no one among them lacked anything. That is the model for us. We are one body in Christ, called to carry each other. If a brother loses his job, the family carries him. If a sister is sick, we pray for her and we cook for her.

True sacrifice only makes sense when you understand the sacrifice Jesus made for you. The church in Jerusalem was the first example of this: they shared, they gave, they sat at each other’s tables.

When we function as one body, we are strong, and the city notices.

Living as a Missional Church

The missional church is not a gathering; it is a movement of faith, boldness, prayer, and family.

Acts 4:1-3 reminds us what a true church looks like. It follows Christ wholeheartedly. It tells people plainly what it has found, without pressure. It depends on God’s power and not its own. It cares for its own and it serves the city it lives in. No performance. No pushing. Just people who have seen something and cannot stop talking about it.

• Tell one person, plainly, what Jesus has done in your life. No argument, no pressure, just what you have seen.
• Pick one person in the church who is struggling and do something practical for them: a meal, a lift, a visit.
• Set a 5 a.m. alarm and spend one hour with Jesus before you touch the phone.
