Loving God and Others

The auto driver overcharges you at the Zirakpur flyover. Your sister-in-law says something sharp at dinner. The neighbour parks across your gate again. By evening you have a list of people you are not speaking to. This message is about the two commandments Jesus said hold everything else together: love God, and love people.

Jesus said: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbour as yourself.’” (Matthew 22:37-39)

Loving God: The First and Greatest Commandment

Loving God is not a rule you keep; it is a relationship you put first with your heart, your soul and your mind. Heart, soul, mind. Nothing left over. A true relationship with God looks very different from following rules or performing rituals. You can attend every service and still not love Him. Love for God shows itself in worship, in prayer, in obedience and in faith.

Here is the good news. God’s command is also God’s gift. When He commands you to love Him, He gives you the ability to do it. He is not asking you to work harder at religion. He is asking for your heart. A father does not want his son’s chores; he wants his son.

Love Is the Centre of Everything

Take love out of your Christian life, and everything that remains is noise. The most essential principle you hold shapes every other value, and that principle must be love. Any action without love is worthless. 1 Corinthians 13:1-3 says you can speak in tongues, prophesy, give everything to the poor and even give up your body, and without love you gain nothing.

People try to repair their works and their behaviour without finding the root. If the root is not love, nothing good will grow from it. Jesus did not come to start a religion. He came to reveal the love of God to the world, and He proved it every single day. Look at your prayer, your giving and your service this week. Where is the love in it?

Actions Speak Love

Love that stays in your heart and never reaches your hands is not yet love. Worship is an action. Prayer is an action. Obedience is an action. But an action loses its meaning when it comes from anything other than love. God does not want formal participation. He wants love that moves. When love is the source, your actions become strong and pleasing in His sight. Send the message. Make the call. Cook the meal for the family that is grieving. That is worship too.

Loving Others: The Second Commandment

You cannot say you love God and then treat the person in front of you as an enemy. Jesus joined the two commandments together. Love God completely; love your neighbour as yourself. Everyone who stands in front of you is your neighbour, including the difficult ones. Jesus tells us to love others the way we love ourselves, even though we are human and full of defects. This takes effort, but it brings the results God wants.

Stop judging. Stop fault-finding. God did not call you to that job. Your work is to love, to support and to appreciate. Hidden anger between believers affects your heart and blocks your prayers. Let love rule your heart, and you will see God move in ways you have never seen before.

God’s Holiness Flows from His Love

God is holy because God is love, and His holiness is the purity of that love. Why is God holy? Because He is love. His holiness is not coldness. It is love so pure that nothing dirty can stay near it. If you want to mirror God’s holiness, you must carry His love.

Those who want to walk in the power of God’s kingdom must love people deeply. Speak positively. Lift people up. Love difficult people especially, because nobody ever taught them love. Be the one who shows them.

The Impact of Jesus’ Love

The Pharisees kept every rule and changed nobody; Jesus loved people and changed the world. In three and a half years of ministry Jesus loved sinners, welcomed the ones religion had pushed away, and forgave the men who crucified Him. He did not come to condemn. He came to mend broken hearts. If Jesus lives in your heart, His love will show through you.

A church grows because people sense the genuine love of God in it. That love is a magnet. It pulls people in and changes them from the inside.

Loving Beyond Limits

Loving people who love you is easy; the power of God shows when you love the ones who hurt you. Jesus said that loving those who love you is no great achievement. Real power appears when you learn to love an enemy through persecution and pain. Love them anyway. Forgive them. Pray for them. Speak well of them.

Never let the poison of bitterness touch your soul. Unforgiveness blocks your prayers and your relationship with God. Love removes that blockage, and peace returns to your heart.

Love Transforms Generations

Your children will not remember your speeches; they will copy what you do at the dinner table. What you do today speaks louder to your children and grandchildren than anything you say. They will follow your example. People who receive love from you will make love their own pattern. People who see bitterness will carry bitterness forward. Be the change. Leave your home each morning carrying the love of God. It starts with you.

The Power of Practising Love

Most of us know about the love of God; the question is whether anyone can see it in us. Love was never meant to be stored. It fulfils itself in action. Take the negativity out. Stop the gossip. Forgive the offence. Speak life, not judgement. Words talk about love; practice proves it.

Loving God and loving others is the greatest commandment ever given. Jesus did not come to set up a religion; He came to build relationships based on love. Through love, God changes real hearts, real homes and the real world. Start today. Love God deeply and love people genuinely. A life that serves God and blesses others is the life that pleases Him.
