Like snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honor is not fitting for a fool.

जैसा धूपकाल में हिम का, या कटनी के समय वर्षा होना, वैसा ही मूर्ख की महिमा भी ठीक नहीं होती।

Like a fluttering sparrow, like a darting swallow, so the undeserved curse doesn’t come to rest.

जैसे गौरैया घूमते-घूमते और शूपाबेनी उड़ते-उड़ते नहीं बैठती, वैसे ही व्यर्थ श्राप नहीं पड़ता।

A whip is for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the back of fools!

घोड़े के लिये कोड़ा, गदहे के लिये लगाम, और मूर्खों की पीठ के लिये छड़ी है।

Don’t answer a fool according to his folly, lest you also be like him.

मूर्ख को उसकी मूर्खता के अनुसार उत्तर न देना ऐसा न हो कि तू भी उसके तुल्य ठहरे।

Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.

मूर्ख को उसकी मूर्खता के अनुसार उत्तर देना, ऐसा न हो कि वह अपनी दृष्टि में बुद्धिमान ठहरे।

One who sends a message by the hand of a fool is cutting off feet and drinking violence.

जो मूर्ख के हाथ से सन्देशा भेजता है, वह मानो अपने पाँव में कुल्हाड़ा मारता और विष पीता है।

Like the legs of the lame that hang loose, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

जैसे लँगड़े के पाँव लड़खड़ाते हैं, वैसे ही मूर्खों के मुँह में नीतिवचन होता है।

As one who binds a stone in a sling, so is he who gives honor to a fool.

जैसे पत्थरों के ढेर में मणियों की थैली, वैसे ही मूर्ख को महिमा देनी होती है।

Like a thorn bush that goes into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouth of fools.

जैसे मतवाले के हाथ में काँटा गड़ता है, वैसे ही मूर्खों का कहा हुआ नीतिवचन भी दुःखदाई होता है।

As an archer who wounds all, so is he who hires a fool or he who hires those who pass by.

जैसा कोई तीरन्दाज जो अकारण सब को मारता हो, वैसा ही मूर्खों या राहगीरों का मजदूरी में लगानेवाला भी होता है।

As a dog that returns to his vomit, so is a fool who repeats his folly.

जैसे कुत्ता अपनी छाँट को चाटता है, वैसे ही मूर्ख अपनी मूर्खता को दोहराता है।

Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.

यदि तू ऐसा मनुष्य देखे जो अपनी दृष्टि में बुद्धिमान बनता हो, तो उससे अधिक आशा मूर्ख ही से है।

The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road! A fierce lion roams the streets!”

आलसी कहता है, “मार्ग में सिंह है, चौक में सिंह है!”

As the door turns on its hinges, so does the sluggard on his bed.

जैसे किवाड़ अपनी चूल पर घूमता है, वैसे ही आलसी अपनी खाट पर करवटें लेता है।

The sluggard buries his hand in the dish. He is too lazy to bring it back to his mouth.

आलसी अपना हाथ थाली में तो डालता है, परन्तु आलस्य के कारण कौर मुँह तक नहीं उठाता।

The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who answer with discretion.

आलसी अपने को ठीक उत्तर देनेवाले सात मनुष्यों से भी अधिक बुद्धिमान समझता है।

Like one who grabs a dog’s ears is one who passes by and meddles in a quarrel not his own.

जो मार्ग पर चलते हुए पराए झगड़े में विघ्न डालता है, वह उसके समान है, जो कुत्ते को कानों से पकड़ता है।

Like a madman who shoots torches, arrows, and death,

जैसा एक पागल जो जहरीले तीर मारता है,

is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, “Am I not joking?”

वैसा ही वह भी होता है जो अपने पड़ोसी को धोखा देकर कहता है, “मैं तो मजाक कर रहा था।”

For lack of wood a fire goes out. Without gossip, a quarrel dies down.

जैसे लकड़ी न होने से आग बुझती है, उसी प्रकार जहाँ कानाफूसी करनेवाला नहीं, वहाँ झगड़ा मिट जाता है।

As coals are to hot embers, and wood to fire, so is a contentious man to kindling strife.

जैसा अंगारों में कोयला और आग में लकड़ी होती है, वैसा ही झगड़ा बढ़ाने के लिये झगड़ालू होता है।

The words of a whisperer are as dainty morsels, they go down into the innermost parts.

कानाफूसी करनेवाले के वचन, स्वादिष्ट भोजन के समान भीतर उतर जाते हैं।

Like silver dross on an earthen vessel are the lips of a fervent one with an evil heart.

जैसा कोई चाँदी का पानी चढ़ाया हुआ मिट्टी का बर्तन हो, वैसा ही बुरे मनवाले के प्रेम भरे वचन होते हैं।

A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but he harbors evil in his heart.

जो बैरी बात से तो अपने को भोला बनाता है, परन्तु अपने भीतर छल रखता है,

When his speech is charming, don’t believe him, for there are seven abominations in his heart.

उसकी मीठी-मीठी बात पर विश्वास न करना, क्योंकि उसके मन में सात घिनौनी वस्तुएँ रहती हैं;

His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.

चाहे उसका बैर छल के कारण छिप भी जाए, तो भी उसकी बुराई सभा के बीच प्रगट हो जाएगी।

Whoever digs a pit shall fall into it. Whoever rolls a stone, it will come back on him.

जो गड्ढा खोदे, वही उसी में गिरेगा, और जो पत्थर लुढ़काए, वह उलटकर उसी पर लुढ़क आएगा।

A lying tongue hates those it hurts; and a flattering mouth works ruin.

जिसने किसी को झूठी बातों से घायल किया हो वह उससे बैर रखता है, और चिकनी चुपड़ी बात बोलनेवाला विनाश का कारण होता है।
